Sierra Mountain Center
The Sierra Nevada has some of the finest wilderness skiing available in California and North America. What John Muir called ‘the Range of Light” typically get huge quantities of snow and storms that dump 6-8 feet snow are not uncommon.
Sierra Mountain Center is a company of experienced guides based locally with 25 years of local skiing background and a list of “firsts” throughout the range. We employ IFMGA International Federation of Mountain Guides Association) and AMGA (American Mountain Guides Association) guides who are trained and evaluated professionals
We offer a full range of programs from lift served backcountry to full ten day trips that traverse one side of the Sierra Nevada to the other.
Trips are offered year round from December through May.
The best time for the longer distance tours is April to May when the avalanche danger has decrease and the snow stabilized and turned to the legendary Sierra corn snow, which we also refer to as ‘ego snow”. This snow allow us to ski into May at elevations of up to 14,00 feet with warm days and cool nights. Corn snow is easy to ski and before long one is skiing steeper slopes than ever imagined. In the Sierra we are skiing long after the rest of the country has put away their skis and turned to other activities.
Programs: Hut trips. No, not your typical European hut but a shelter about three miles from the roadhead near Bishop that offers a comfortable shelter with great backcountry skiing right out the door. December-April
Ski Descents. Ski from the top of 12,000 feet peaks down into the low elevation desert. March-May.
Lift Served Backcountry. These trips are operated from June Mountain and are the easy way to get into the wilderness. December-April.
Spring Corn Camps. Set up a basecamp in the Wilderness and ski as much as you can or relax in spectacular mountain surroundings.
Spring Tours. These are what the Sierra Nevada excels in. Trips from three days to ten days that venture into he heart of the Sierra Nevada. Our specialities include the Sierra High Route, a six or seven day backcountry aficionado’s delight that traverses the range from east to west for 50 miles and is completed by a flight back into Bishop. As well there are many other tours and ones that we have pioneered.
In addition we also offer Avalanche and Skills courses designed to get you up to speed for undertaking your own trips into the mountains
