Time To Say Goodbye: Nordics As always, the spring time is the moment for World Cup athletes to take a step back and reflect on their careers, with some choosing to hang up their skis and move on. Based on the information that has come to the attention of the FIS Newsflash, the upcoming FIS Nordic World Cup season 2012/2013 will be without Cross-Country skiers Odd Bjoern Hjelmeset of Norway, Silvana Bucher (SUI), Ivan Batory (SVK) whilst Emilie Vina, Elodie Bourgeois-Pin and Caroline Weibel will be missing from the French ladies' team. In Ski Jumping the biggest name retiring is Finland's Matti Hautamki.

The always smiling Odd-Bjoern Hjelmeset from Nordfjordeid earned 19 individual podiums including eight World Cup wins during his long World Cup career, which began in 1993. The classical technique specialist won the gold medal over 50 km in Sapporo 2007 and three bronze medals in Ramsau 1999, in Lahti 2001 and Oberstdorf 2005. Hjelmeset also won the bronze medal at the Salt Lake City 2002 Games in the 50km and a silver medal in the 4x10 km relay in Vancouver 2010 as well as three relay titles at the World Championships in Oberstdorf, Sapporo and Liberec.

The Swiss ladies' team will be missing Silvana Bucher who too has chosen to end her long career. The 27-year-old Swiss A-team athlete had to fight with many health problems and even skip the complete 2008/2009 season due to a viral infection. Silvana Bucher's career best results include the U23 world champion title from 2006 in Tarvisio and two top ten World Cup results in the 2010/11 season in Oslo and Rybinsk.

Cross-Country skiing veteran Ivan Batory of Slovakia has also decided to quit professional skiing after almost 20 years at the top level. Batory made his World Cup debut in 1993 and during his career scored three World Cup podiums. The five-time Olympian had his most successful appearance at the Games in Torino 2006 with an 8th place in the team sprint.

The team event at the season finals in Planica (SLO) was the final competition of a long career for Matti Hautamki. The Finn is one of the most successful ski jumpers with 16 World Cup wins, and third place in the overall World Cup twice. In 2003 he won silver in the individual competition and gold with the team at the World Championships in Val di Fiemme. A year earlier he won silver in the team competition at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, only 0.1 points behind Germany and an individual bronze medal, whilst in 2006 he won Olympic silver behind the surprise gold medallist Lars Bystoel. In the 2004/05 season he won six World Cups in a row which remains a record to this day with no jumper having equalled this feat.

Matti Hautamki may never have won a major title, but he was part of the successful Finnish ski jumping team for more than ten years.

In Nordic Combined, all the top athletes are planning to continue their careers based on currently available information.

Venue Work Top Focus for Vail/Beaver Creek 2015 Plans for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2015 are well underway. Officials from FIS, the Vail Valley Foundation, Tridem Sports, Vail Resorts and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association wrapped up two days of Coordination Group Meetings Wednesday in Vail. They visited both competition venues, including the Birds of Prey and Golden Peak finish areas, as well as operational and ceremony sites .

"It is terrific to work directly with Organizers and to have everyone around the table providing value," said FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis. "The ability to have all parties working together allows us all to uphold the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships as the premier winter sports event outside the Olympic Winter Games. The fact that Vail Resorts and USSA leadership is participating actively with the Organizing Committee is a big help in the preparations."

The Coordination Group meetings are held with World Championship Organizers two times a year. The group last met during the December Birds of Prey World Cup in Beaver Creek.

Organizers gave a detailed tour of the Birds of Prey finish area, outlining plans for upgrades to the existing finish stadium and creation of a new ladies' downhill course. Pending final approvals, work on those projects is anticipated to begin soon. FIS officials were especially excited about the opportunities presented by the Vail Golden Peak venue that will play host to the opening ceremony, qualifying events and the Nation's Team Event. The group also visited the proposed medals venue at the Solaris plaza in Vail Village.

While most of the competition events will be held at Beaver Creek, it is anticipated the Vail will become the epicenter for fans with key events at Golden Peak and daily medal ceremonies located right in the village. "We've been successful with major events in our country because we work together," said USSA President and CEO Bill Marolt. "Each party here plays a role in the success of the World Championships." "We have a terrific team in place," offered Ceil Folz, president of the Vail Valley Foundation, "both in terms of our internal 2015 Organizing Committee and our partners from the FIS, EBU, Tridem and USSA. We are pleased to say that everything is on track as we near 1,000 days to go until the Championships."

The World Championships are set for 3rd-15th February 2015.

Busy Week for Fiemme 2013 The Organizing Committee for Fiemme 2013 is making great progress. With just over 9 months until the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships there begin, the venues in Lago di Tesero (Cross-Country Stadium) and Predazzo (Ski Jumping Arena) are practically finished, whilst the Cavalese congress center is presently under refurbishment scheduled for completion at the end of the summer, to be ready to hos t the Fiemme 2013 main media center.

Last week, the Fiemme 2013 team together with the Championship's marketing partner Tridem Sports held a sponsor workshop with the international brands that will be supporting the event, namely Viessmann, Vattenfall, Intersport, Coop, Bet-at-home, Hyundai and Trentino.

The Eurovision broadcasters (ZDF, ARD, NRK, ORF, SVT, YLE, RTV and SRG, among others) along with Italy's RAI Sport team also gathered in Val di Fiemme for the World Broadcaster Meeting. Representing the host broadcaster, Maurizio Ciarn, RAI coordinator for Fiemme 2013, said, "We will be using all our available resources to offer the highest product in terms of professionalism and functionality. We've been developing the project for months and will be able to respond to any requests from the international broadcasters."

The Cross-Country competitions will be covered by 35 cameras while the ski jumping stadium will be presented through 16 cameras. RAI and Fiemme 2013 aim to reach more than 500 million spectators across the globe, the benchmark set by the 2003 Nordic Worlds held in Val di Fiemme.

Finally, the penultimate Coordination Group meeting for Fiemme 2013 completed the busy week in the Valley of Fiemme on Friday. Again, all aspects of the Organizers' progress were reviewed and the joint FIS and Tridem Sports team was very pleased with what they saw.

Sarah Lewis, FIS Secretary General commented: "The FIS Coordination Group is highly satisfied with the latest progress made by the Organising Committee and the host broadcast operation of RAI Sport. A great enthusiasm is growing and the confidence of the team has been boosted after successful FIS World Cup events last season. Now we can look forward to the final inspection in October and major international media attention with keen anticipation."

Two Seasons of Heavenly Freestyle One of the world’s top destinations for ski holidays; the South Lake Tahoe ski resort of Heavenly Mountain is confirmed to be hosting the U.S. Freestyle Championships for two consecutive seasons in 2012-13 and 2013-14.

The U.S. Freestyle Championships is a competition which tests both men’s and women’s mogul, dual mogul, and aerial abilities. It is not the first time the resort has hos
ted the competition; Heavenly hosted the 2004 U.S. Freestyle Championships, and also the international FIS World Cup Freestyle events in 1999 and 2000. This announcement from the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) comes about a month after the news that the 2013 U.S. Alpine National Championships will be held in the close by resort of Squaw Valley from March 17-23. The competition will be followed up by the U.S. Freestyle Championships on March 29-31.

Heavenly covers two states; California and Nevada, has an average of 11 meters of snow, and over 300 days of sunshine each year. The freestyle competition takes place at the freestyle arena, on the Californian side of the resort. The mogul event is on Heavenly’s infamous Gunbarrel slope, described by Heavenly’s general manager Pete Sonntag as “the most iconic moguls run in North America… It’s the ultimate challenge for America’s top freestyle skiers.” The aerials contest will take place adjacent to Gunbarrel, at the base of World Cup run in California.

Crystal Ski offers ski holidays to the USA and several European ski resorts. Skiing holidays to Lake Tahoe cost from £848 per person for a week’s room only stay in Heavenly resort in the USA including flights from Heathrow.
