Ashworth College, a leader in online education, today announced that author, motivational speaker, U.S. Olympic team sports psychologist and Ashworth (http://www.ashworthcollege.edu) instructor, Dr. Nicole Detling Miller, will be the keynote speaker at this year's graduation ceremony to be held on August 7, 2010 at Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta, GA.

Recently, Dr. Detling Miller serve
d as the official U.S. Speed Skating Team sports psychologist and "mental coach" during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, assisting athletes in overcoming any confidence, composure, anxiety and distraction issues that might hinder their performance.

"Sometimes it's the difference between winning an Olympic medal and just missing out. The goal is to have athletes performing at their peak," said Dr. Detling Miller, who serves as chief instructor and subject matter expert for Ashworth's Sports Psychology program. "By the time athletes reach the Olympics they are comparable in terms of skill and physical ability. What gets them to the podium is how well they've prepared themselves mentally."

The 2010 ceremony will be the fourth annual for Ashworth College, a provider of accredited online college degrees and online high school diplomas. Attending a live graduation ceremony has special significance for Ashworth graduates. Not only does it honor a long-standing tradition shared by students worldwide, for most grads it is quite possibly the first live interaction with faculty, staff and other students. The average Ashworth student completes their education online, from home, anywhere in the world without stepping foot in a classroom or ever meeting an instructor face-to-face.

"Graduation is Ashworth's Olympics... where graduates climb up to the podium and are recognized for their hard-earned accomplishments in front of their peers and family," said F. Milton Miller, Ed.D., Ashworth College Vice President of Education. "We're looking forward to hearing Dr. Detling Miller's message at this year's ceremony. Miller acknowledged that what Ashworth graduates have learned academically is only the foundation for what will make them successful."

Dr. Miller's course, Sport Psychology for Peak Performance, is designed for coaches, trainers, exercise and fitness instructors, recreation directors and athletes who want to improve performance. Her online course teaches useful mental strategies, goal setting, maintaining concentration, handling competitive pressure, and much more.

Dr. Detling Miller holds multiple degrees in sports psychology including a BA in psychology and sports science from Ohio Wesleyan University, her MS in sport psychology from Ithaca College, and her Ph.D. in sport psychology at the University of Utah. She also completed an internship in sport psychology and sports medicine at the Mayo Clinic.

Besides her involvement with Ashworth College and the U.S. Olympics, Dr. Detling Miller is a frequent presenter at international and professional conferences, has been guest speaker at several U.S. coaching clinics and co-authored book chapters and contributed to numerous professional publications.

A three sport collegiate athlete (basketball, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field), Dr. Detling Miller maintains an active lifestyle playing soccer, rock climbing, downhill skiing, and mountain biking. She currently lives in the Salt Lake City, Utah area with her husband, John, and sons, Logan and Elias.

"We're very proud of the fact that one of our instructors is affiliated with the U.S. Olympic team and has helped numerous athletes achieve success," said Gary M. Keisling, Ashworth College Chairman and CEO. "We're also proud to have her as part of the Ashworth family and thrilled to have her participate in this special occasion."

Past Ashworth commencement speakers include two-time Ashworth graduate Didiayer Snyder, team designer on the Emmy Award-winning Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Mike Lambert, Executive Director of the Distance Education and Training Council.

LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand – A wide range of abilities were on display at the Summit Saddle Freeride Challenge as over sixty skiers and snowboarders battled it out on the steep faces and rock gardens beneath the Saddle Quad Chairlift of Treble Cone last Saturday.

Providing great entertainment for spectators the challenge for skiers and boarders was in completing the course with fluid cl
ean runs proving competency as they took on the drops and executed tricks. The top ten male and top three female freeskiers secured their spots in the Volkl New Zealand Freeski Open North Face finals which takes place on 16 August.

Sam Lee produced a quality second run to give him top honours in the freeski competition, with Tom Brownlee a very close second. Jeremy Gardner finished in third place.

The women’s field was dominated by freeskier Mitchey Greig with two good runs. Sarah Martinais achieved second place and Sophia Mitteregger came third.

While not a qualifying event for snowboarders, a supreme display of big air and tricks was performed for the crowd, with the top three freeriders scoring highly. In the men’s field Ruari MacFarlane scored a 9.2, Colin Boyd (9.0) took second place and Phil Dominick (8.7) third.

In the women’s snowboard competition Malin Lindroos produced two clean runs to win the woman’s title, Stephanie Takarangi followed in second and Abby Peterson third.

The Summit Saddle Freeride Challenge was sponsored by Summit, Mars and Dragon. For further information, visit www.treblecone.com.

A head to head encounter in The North Face Peak to Peak on Saturday (July 24) saw the defending open champion team Outside Sports (Queenstown), ousted by a dynamic young side fielded by Queenstown’s Fergburger, who crossed the finish line at Coronet Peak in a record time of just over two hours.

Race Director Geoff Hunt says it was one of the most exciting races the event has seen in
its 17 years. “We had a real race on our hands from the outset and it was a tribute to both teams who exhibited fantastic skills in every section.”

The 44km multisport race attracted 90 teams and 69 individual athletes. It began with a 2km ski or snowboard on The Remarkables finishing at the access road, followed by a 17km mountain bike ride down the high altitude road to Lake Wakatipu. A 7km paddle to Queenstown Bay led to a 9km run from Queenstown via Arthurs Point to a changeover point near the foot of Coronet Peak, for the final 9km cycle ride to finish at the base building at the top of the ski area.

“In the run Fergburger’s Grant Guise took on the guru Adrian Bailey then the cycle up Coronet Peak was an incredible battle between Scott Lyttle and Scott Rainsford with Lyttle making the charge to cross the line in first place,” says Hunt.

Fergburger won in 2.02.51 and Outside Sports was forced to take second place in 2.04.19. Outside Sports team manager Jim Hawkridge praised the Fergburger team for its outstanding performance.

“It was great to have a race like that and we don’t mind losing to such a class team. They are all good athletes and the competition was fantastic.”

The individual men’s race was also a strong challenge between winner Adam Milne (Christchurch) and Gavin Mason (Wanaka). Milne took the title in 2.16.14 with Mason having to be content with the bridesmaid’s role for the second consecutive year.

He clocked 2.18.49 which was six minutes faster than his 2009 result. He was philosophical about his second placing. “Adam had a point to prove after I finished second in this year’s Goldrush and he took out third. He raced really well today.”

Milne says he was particularly pleased with his result because he had such a bad start in the ski section. “I was just about last, I kept falling over. However I managed to pass a lot of people on the downhill bike ride from The Remarkables and then the race was on.”

Tim Pearson (Wanaka) took third place in 2.23.24.

First time Peak to Peak competitor Simone Maier (Wanaka) dominated the individual women’s division stopping the clock at 2.37.58.

“I used gear from Joanna Williams who won it last year. She told me I could only borrow it if I won the race!”

Maier also beat William’s 2009 time by just under 14 minutes.

Second place went to Ailsa Rollinson (Wanaka) in 2.55.20 and Floortje Draisma (Wanaka) was third in 2.57.06.

Honours in the men’s veteran division went to Brett Leyden (Christchurch) in 2.29.15 while Moira Finlin ( Queenstown) recorded 3.20.11. to take the women’s title.

Queenstown wheelchair athlete Derek Stewart arrived at the Coronet Peak finish line in his wheel machine to strong applause from the waiting crowd after completing the entire course in 3.37.27

“Cycling the last part of the Coronet Peak hill to the finish was the toughest part because of the loose gravel. My big motivation to get there was knowing I would never have to do it again.”

In the teams’ section the hotly contested business house division was a tight finish for the top three. Aotea Electric (Queenstown) was first in 2.29.27, Barker Construction Nailers (Queenstown) second in 2.31.35 and Dart River Jets (Queenstown) third in 2.32.20.

Team Fluoro (Dunedin and Christchuch) and the highly favoured R&R Sports Whippets (Queenstown) fought it out in the women’s team event with Fluoro crossing the line in 2.31.09, two seconds ahead of their rivals.

The first veteran team was Browns Avanti Plus (Queenstown) in 2.16.34 with the two person team High Country Lads (Cromwell/Wanaka) second in 2.50.40. The mixed team division was won by Greenacres (Christchurch) in 2.12.55.

Blake Luff aged 19 (Dunedin) was fastest individual junior in 2.54.40 and the title for the fastest school team was won by Mt Aspiring College (Wanaka) in 2.30.59.

Veteran Bill Godsall (Cromwell) and New Zealand marathon runner Chris Dagg (Queenstown) received special mention for competing in all 17 Peak to Peak events.
