The West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the dates for the 2008 Yellowstone Ski Festival. Join over three thousand other Nordic ski enthusiasts in West Yellowstone during the Thanksgiving week. With the fourth Thursday in November falling late in the month, we anticipate another successful snow packed festival. Back again for 2008 are the ever popular ski clinics, on-snow d emo show, indoor trade show, kids camps, wax demos, speakers, and of course the SuperTour races. The post-Labor Day rush has begun. If you haven’t already, now is the time to reserve your room for the week and register for the clinics. Let’s look in depth to the Yellowstone Ski Festival.

Nordic Ski Clinics. Register now and secure your space in one of the highly acclaimed Nordic Ski Clinics of the year. Choose from five, three, or one day clinics. Each day you will have two on-snow sessions with our elite instructors and an evening classroom session. Skiers of all abilities will find our clinics valuable. For beginners, there is no better way to learn than to spend a few days with a knowledgeable instructor for both on snow and off snow training. For experienced skiers, start your season off right by brushing up on your technique or learning a new skill. The 2008 Clinic Registration form is available online at http://yellowstoneskifestival.com/Clinic_Registration%202008.pdf.htm.

On-Snow Demo Show. With the purchase of a Rendezvous Ski Trail Pass for this week, you can experience the industry’s largest on-snow demo show. All the major Nordic Ski manufactures will be on the Rendezvous Ski Trails demonstrating their new gear for the 2008-2009 season. The Try It and Buy It demo area will be open during the day for all five days of the show. There is no better way to shop for new Nordic gear than to try it on snow at the Yellowstone Ski Festival.

Indoor Trade Show. Spend Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday evening strolling the Indoor Trade Show held in the West Yellowstone Holiday Inn. Talk to industry sales representatives, learn something new at a waxing seminar, or simply enjoy the presentations showcased nightly. The indoor trade show is a great way to cap off a day on the trails. Montana Outdoor Science School. Bring the kids and make the Yellowstone Ski Festival a family tradition. The M.O.S.S. is currently preparing a program specifically for the children in West Yellowstone this week. Stay tuned and we will announce the curriculum as soon as possible. Don’t forget to pre-register your kids directly with the Montana Outdoor Science School.

SuperTour and Biathlon Races. Competitive racing for the 2008-2009 season starts in West Yellowstone. We will be offering two biathlon events sponsored by Altius Handcrafted Firearms on Thanksgiving Day, a sprint race and a novice race. This year, West Yellowstone will host two distance SuperTour races. Join us on the trails Friday for a freestyle event and Saturday for the classic race.

Where to Stay. Do not delay in reserving your hotel, motel, cabin, condo, or rental house in West Yellowstone for Thanksgiving week. Please support our sponsors and call them today to reserve your lodging. Brandin’ Iron Inn, Holiday Inn, Days Inn, Three Bear Lodge, Yellowstone Lodge, and the Faithful Street Inn can not wait to hear from you. Living up to its reputation for having the longest ski season in the Southern Hemisphere, Mt. Hutt out of Christchurch in New Zealand has more snow on the forecast promising an amazing end to the season.

The ski season at the high country resort officially closes this Sunday (19 October) but that’s only the official closing according to Mt Hutt Ski Area Manager, Dave Wilson who promi
ses to reopen (weather permitting) on NZ Labour Weekend 24-27 October. “It’s been one of the best seasons in decades,” he said. “We’ve had natural snowfalls of nearly 6m throughout the season building up to the magic 3m base in September – the largest base in 10 years.

“And the season isn’t over yet! Snow is forecast for the weekend so we hope to get in a few more magic powder days before the end.”

Weather permitting base facilities to re-open on Labour Weekend includes the Sky High Café, Rental and Repair, and the Snow Shop.

The November issue of Outside Magazine reveals what skiers all over the world have known for years: AltaSnowbird is the top skiing destination in North America.

Outside Magazine’s editorial staff and readership each named AltaSnowbird the top resort in North America based on snow quality and terrain. The resorts, which received the season’s first significant storm over the weekend w
ith eight inches of snowfall, began offering a combined pass to ski the collective 4,700 acres in 2002.

“We’re flattered to be named the top resort in North America by Outside,” said Snowbird President Bob Bonar. “AltaSnowbird offers an unparalleled winter experience, and with our fantastic combination of terrain, snow and affordability, we look forward to having another memorable season.”

Outside Magazine’s top resort honor is one of a handful of accolades the Little Cottonwood Canyon resorts have received in 2008. AltaSnowbird was named the top resort for snow in both SKI and SKIING Magazines. In addition, both resorts were among the top 10 for the categories of best overall mountain, steeps and backcountry access in SKIING Magazine, top 10 for steeps in SKI Magazine and one of the top 10 resorts in North America in Freeskier Magazine.

“All of us here are proud to be Alta skiers on this 70th Anniversary, and that skiing pride only grows when we combine with Snowbird,” remarked Alta General Manager Onno Wieringa. “Thank you to the Outside staff and readers that truly appreciate skiing.”

The AltaSnowbird day pass will sell for $85/day in the upcoming 2008-09 season with a multi-day price of $80/day for three to four days and $75/day for five-plus days. Located 40 minutes from Salt Lake City International Airport, Snowbird and Alta are two of the most accessible resorts in North America. Offering the longest season in Utah, Snowbird is scheduled to open for the 2008-09 season Saturday, Nov. 22. Alta’s scheduled opening is Friday, Nov. 21.

French Alps based ski coaching company First Tracks will take coaching on the move this winter (08/09) with a new concept - Ski Safaris.

Les 3 Vallées based First Tracks will offer four ski safari options ranging from one day ski safaris by land and air - Jet Safari Day Trip, through to the Ultimate Ski Safari on which the skiers will work their way across the Alps guided by their dedi
cated coach, every day experiencing a new ski area and each night a different place to enjoy - with their luggage transported to the night stop locations. A variety of Jet Safari Day Trips are available, the most exciting being the challenge of skiing away from the home resort guided by a First Tracks Coach crossing adjoining areas to see how far away the skiers or boarders can get. At the end of the day they're flown home by helicopter.

On the Base Camp Safari skiers can relax in a catered chalet and every day be guided in a different ski area, travelling by road or helicopter - First Tracks is currently speaking to chalet companies and tour operators who are keen to be able to offer their guests this service. Already signed up is Meribel based Ski Chardon Bleu who will be offering First Tracks Base Camp Ski Safaris and exciting Jet Safari Day Trips to their clients. Finally "A la carte Safari" enables clients to tailor make their itinerary depending on their ski dream.

Ashley Kay, ex-British Alpine Ski Team member and founder of First Tracks, said; "A ski safari will add the thrill of exploration and discovery to a holiday on the snow, by making it possible for skiers and snowboarders to enjoy skiing a variety of resorts, ski areas and terrain - all whilst improving their technique and increasing their confidence on the snow."

Ashley continued; "Traditional ski teaching offers limited opportunities to explore - often having to return to the same point within 2 hours of leaving - with our ski coaching safaris clients can ski all day and then heli home."

From intermediate through to expert skiers there are safaris to suit all standards. All ski safaris include lunches, lift passes, transport and insurance, enabling clients to be able to be able to get on with enjoying their holiday knowing all the arrangements are being made for them. Full details and prices are online at www.first-tracks.fr
