Maine's Sunday River Resort will welcome the world of snowboarding when it hosts the Visa U.S. Snowboarding Cup this February 27 - March 1, 2009 the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association announced recently. It will be the sole U.S. World Cup stop for snowboardcross and parallel giant slalom. The worldwide World Cup schedules were approved by the FIS Congress in the end of May at its meeting in Cape Town, South Africa.

"It's an incredible opportunity to take a world-class event to a resort like Sunday River where they have great passion and first class resources within their events department," said USSA Vice President of Events Calum Clark. "We look for this event to be a showcase for snowboarding in New England."

Sunday River Resort has long been committed to hosting elite level competitions from alpine and freestyle skiing to snowboarding including the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix, the elite snowboarding series in North America. The resort also hosted a FIS Freestyle World Cup in 2001.

"We're looking forward to welcoming the best snowboarders in the world,” said Jim Costello, director of marketing for Sunday River and Sugarloaf. "These are fantastic spectator events. Thanks to Seth Wescott (Sugarloaf, ME), Maine knows just how exciting snowboardcross can be.”

The world's best snowboardcross athletes are expected to compete including Maine's Olympic SBX gold medalist Wescott, Olympic silver medalist Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton, VT), three-time X Games champion Nate Holland (Squaw Valley, CA) and snowboarding legend Shaun Palmer (South Lake Tahoe, CA), to name just a few.

Snowboardcross, which never fails to amp up the crowd with its competitive intensity, has four riders at a time tackling the varying terrain of turns and jumps. The snowboarding discipline debuted at the 2006 Olympics.

Parallel giant slalom also will heat things up with nothing but high speeds as racers go head-to-head until a winner is determined. Massachusetts native Tyler Jewell (Steamboat Springs, CO), who had two World Cup podiums last season including a second place finish at the World Cup in Lake Placid, NY, will look to have success in front of a U.S. crowd again.

Olympic bronze medalist Chris Klug (Aspen, CO), Olympian Michelle Gorgone (Boston) and World Cup performers Adam Smith (Bend, OR) and Justin Reiter (Steamboat Springs, CO) also are expected.

"The competitions will be intense and with the finish arena in the base-area for both events, spectators will easily see the sports up close. It will be a fun and exciting weekend for all," added Clark.

Toddlers enjoy their first exposure to skiing in Smugglers’ Notch Resort’s Little Rascals on Snow program. Experienced staff from the Resort’s renowned child care facility TREASURES and Snow Sport University (SSU) team up to introduce children as young as 2 1/2 to skiing with games and instruction.

The program introduces children to skiing in small doses, allowing them to have fu
n on the snow and get the feel of skis and ski equipment without taking on the challenge of a full day on-snow program.

Children spend a portion of the day in TREASURES and a portion of the day —divided into several increments—on the snow. A small group setting ensures success for these beginning skiers. Before heading outside, children have fun playing "dress up" in their ski equipment.

On the snow, the teaching staff uses tools specially designed for younger kids, such as H bars and harnesses. These support aids allow beginning skiers freedom to move while maintaining a sense of balance and security. Their first on hill experience incorporates the use of a WonderCarpet, a gently moving conveyor lift, conveniently located right at TREASURES. The Little Rascals’ day runs from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm, charging $109 per day that includes instruction, equipment and helmet rental, snack and lunch.

In the northern region of the Andean Patagonia of Chile, a rare and uniquely valuable property exists, owing much to its location, size, pristine beauty, absolute privacy and ready accessibility. Located in southern Chile's Lake District at a of latitude 40º S, this 63 square mile property is bordered on the west by the Andes mountain range and Argentina's million acre Lanin National Park. To the east are mountain ranges reflected in a pristine mountain lake. Between these mountain borders rests an ancient temperate Andean forest, bursting with wildlife, majestic old-growth trees, vast grass plains and valleys, miles of trout filled rivers and streams, gushing springs, hot springs, waterfalls and over 20 miles of well maintained internal roads that provide dependable access throughout much of the property. This is a place of isolation and privacy, yet is easily accessible from both Chile and neighboring Argentina.

An easy one hour drive to the east, across the Andes is San Martín de los Andes. A charming mountain town nestled on the tip of Lago Lácar, Argentina between high peaks. The town is a regional tourism capital with arts-and-crafts shops, gear-rental shops, restaurants, and hotels that constitute much of downtown. The town is quieter than Bariloche and decidedly more picturesque, thanks to its timber-heavy architecture and Swiss Alpine influence.

San Martín overflows with activities including biking, hiking, boating, snow skiing, hunting and fishing. The tourism infrastructure here is excellent, with every lodging or resort option imaginable and plenty of great restaurants and shopping.

Across the lake and a two hour scenic drive to the west is the charming Chilean coastal town of Valdivia. Valdivia is called the City of Rivers, for the Valdivia, Cau Cau and Calle Calle rivers that surround the city adding much to the areas natural scenic beauty. Valdivia was founded in 1522 by Pedro de Valdivia of Spain, and is considered one of Chile's most beautiful cities. With a rich and vivid history, natural beauty and a fine tourist infrastructure, this port in Chile's gorgeous Lake District is a wonderful place to spend time.

New facial sunscreen company Screen, Inc. has been selected as the exclusive sunscreen sponsor for the 2009 United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) Cross Country Ski Junior Olympics.

Hosted by the Auburn Ski Club and the Far West Nordic Ski Education Association, the event will be held March 7-15, 2009 in Truckee, California.

"We are thrilled to be affilia
ted with the Junior Olympics," said Screen, Inc. founder Lori Nauman. "Sunscreen is especially important for athletes who have prolonged exposure to the sun."

The USSA Junior Olympics are recognized and endorsed by the United States Olympic Committee and have been sponsored by the USSA as the premier junior championship tournament since the mid 1970s. Virtually all of USSA's Olympic and World Champions have participated in the USSA Junior Olympic program.

Athletically, the Junior Olympics is often the launch pad for junior athletes to achieve results and performance standards to gain invitations to U.S. Ski Team training camps or U.S. Ski Team international competition opportunities. The concept of “clear path” advancement is very important to the USSA professional and volunteer leadership. The Junior Olympics provide a perfect performance marker for young athletes who are emerging. In many cases, Junior Olympic medals will provide automatic advancement to higher-level competition.

Screen, Inc. is a sunscreen company headquartered in Reno, Nevada. Specializing in facial sunscreen, they are passionate about sun safety education. Screen, Inc.'s formulas are non-greasy and non-irritating and provide UVA/UVB broad-spectrum protection. Their entire collection earned the coveted Seal of Recommendation from the Skin Cancer Foundation as effective UV sunscreens.
