Thursday, 21 August 2008Through an agreement between Seven Springs Resort and Somerset Trust Company, the Laurel Mountain Ski Resort is set to reopen. This is a 64-acre ski area located on the Westmoreland and Somerset County border in Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands.
Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell approved Seven Springs' bid to operate the said facility. According to reports, $6 million has been allotted for the ski area's renovation.
The Laurel Mountain Ski Resort was first established in 1939 as a private resort for the Mellon Family. Unfortunately, due to financial issues, the resort was closed and out of the skiing circuit for several decades.
At present, the land is owned by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, while the lifts, lodge, snowmaking systems, and other assets are owned by Somerset Trust.

Thursday, 21 August 2008The Seawolves will be getting three new international Nordic skiers to compete this winter, according to Alaska Anchorage head ski coach Trond Flagstad last Monday, August 18.
Laura Rombach and Steffi Hiemer from Germany, and Nils Kristen Sandtroen from Norway signed to ski for Seawolves and they will join UAA's 2008 recruit program's top contenders Amy Glen, Lex Treinen, and Sadie B jornsen.
Rombach and Hiemer took part in the 2007 World Junior Championships as well as in the German Junior National and Europa Cup levels. On the other hand, Sandtroen has impressive results at the Norwegian Junior National Biathlon Championships.

Wednesday, 20 August 2008Hailey Ski Team got two new members to help the team's development. Phil McNichol will serve as the team's director of development, while Richard Smith is the program director and head coach of the team.
Phil McNichol is the former men's alpine head coach of the US Ski Team. He led the team's men's program from 2002 to 2008. This is considered as one of the most successful runs in th e ski team's history.
Richard Smith is also the USSA Eastern Regional Development Coach. Before taking the said post, Smith was affiliated with Holderness School.

Tuesday, 19 August 2008LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand - A weekend of closely fought competition in excellent snow conditions saw both sprint and freestyle titles decided in the FIS Cross-Country Continental Cup at Snow Farm NZ.
On Saturday, Shohei Honda (JPN) took out the men's sprint title in a race that was so close a photo finish was required to decide second and third place. Geoffroy Pais (FRA) had qualified for the finals in the fastest time of 1:50:90 for the 1km lap but could not repeat his speed in the finals falling to third place, a hair's breadth behind Masaaki Kozu (JPN). In the women's event, Bettina Gruber (SUI) qualified a convincing five seconds ahead of the rest of the field and went on to win the sprint title, ahead of Esther Bottomley (AUS) and Sandra Gredig (SUI).
Fresh snowfall on Sunday created beautiful but slow conditions for the men's and women's freestyle races. Canadian national champion Robin McKeever, won the men's 10km title in a time of 26:58:36, just .07 of a second ahead of Japan's Masaaki Kozu in a closely run race that saw Ben Sim (AUS) take third. Highest placed New Zealand, Nat Anglem, finished in 10th place in a field that included a number of World Cup level competitors.
McKeever said of his victory, "The course was great and my second lap felt good after a tough first lap, although I'm glad Masaaki has small feet! There was less than a boot length between us at the end!"
Olympic bronze medalist Milaine Theriault (CAN) continued her success from Thursday's Classic event, taking out first place in the women's 5km Freestyle in a comfortable win over Sumiko Ishigaki (JPN). New Zealand's Katherine Calder completed the women's podium in third place.
Thursday, 14 August 2008LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand - Cross country skiers from around the world gathered at Snow Farm NZ today for the first of the FIS ANC Cup Series races with a strong field of men and women from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, and France.
In the men's 15km Classic Race, a tight bunch of five skiers were neck and neck for the first two laps. Eventual winner Tomio Kanamaru (JPN) broke from the group at the bottom of the last steep hill to finish ahead of nine-time Canadian national champion Robin McKeever and Masaaki Kozu (JPN) in a time of 43:15:20. McKeever has also won two gold and one silver medal athlete 2002 Paralympics, acting as the sighted guide for his brother Brian.
The Japanese skiers have been living and training at the Snow Farm and their altitude training and local knowledge has stood them in good stead. Kanamaru said, "This is my first race of the season and I was very happy to win. We love coming to train at the Snow Farm and enjoy competing against the New Zealand and Australian skiers in these races. Conditions were fast and we had a great group at the front." First New Zealander home was 18-year old Andy Pohl in sixteenth place.
"I was very pleased with my race and it is just so great to have a race with such high caliber skiers right here at the Snow Farm," said Pohl. Pohl will race the sprint and freestyle races on Saturday and Sunday this weekend and finish off the season training at the Snow Farm. In November, Pohl will return to Canada for a second season, racing in the domestic USA and Canadian competitions as a build up to the World Junior Championships to be held in Chamonix, France in January 2009.
In the women's 10 km Classic Race, Olympic bronze medalist Milaine Theriault (CAN) led from the start, winning in a time of 34:39:90. She built up a solid lead after one lap and had extended this to a one-minute lead over Katie Calder (NZE) by the finish. Calder is a recent addition to the New Zealand Cross Country Ski Team after moving from Australia where she has established herself as one of Australasia's top women skiers. In third place was Sumiko Ishigaki from Japan.
Wanaka's 15-year old Anna Hogg put in a strong performance in the women's race as an invited participant, keeping pace with the strong Japanese women's team members. Hogg is a member of the NZ Nordic Sports Development programme and has benefited from the season's coaching under visiting American coach Alexei Sotskov.
The Series continues this weekend with the Sprint Races on Saturday, August 16 and the Freestyle Races on Sunday, August 17.
