Monday, 30 June 2008LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand - Lake Wanaka's 2008 ski season is officially underway with all four fields open for business.
Good snowfalls and optimum snow making conditions throughout last week have provided the mountains a good top up of snow for skiers and snowboarders to enjoy their first turns for the season.
Cardrona Alpine Resort opened on Friday, welcoming eager snow sports enthusiasts to clip on their skis and boards to start the 2008 season and experience the new high speed detachable quad chairlift in the Captain's Basin.
Snow Park NZ opened last June 28 with a traditional Kiwi welcome for skiers and boarders, offering a pie and a stubby as they board the lift for their first ride up the mountain. With good snow coverage across the terrain park, the freestyle action was well underway. Snow Park NZ is looking forward to starting their night skiing and riding sessions this week.
Snow Farm opened for the cross-country skiers with many kilometers of trails. The Snow Farm will continue its successful development of Biathlon this year, with work undertaken to install a range accessed from the trail system.
The roll-out of Lake Wanaka's ski areas continues with Treble Cone opening today. The recent snowfalls will provide skiers and boarders great on-piste conditions at Treble Cone, with all visitors and staff encouraged to car pool to support their commitment to sustainable tourism practices.
John Alldred, CEO of Lake Wanaka Tourism, said there was a positive buzz of excitement in town, "The ski season has started and it is great to see snow enthusiasts coming from around the globe to experience our four world-class resorts and enjoy the unique alpine town," he said.
The new developments for Lake Wanaka's four ski areas include: a high speed quad char lift, night skiing and riding, an Olympic standard halfpipe, advanced and increased snow making capabilities, and an enhanced beginners' terrain park.

Monday, 30 June 2008The summer season will no longer keep Nordic skiers from training and enjoying the slopes. With roller skis, winter sport athletes can now continue to improve their skills and techniques during the off-season.
Roller skis first became a hit in the 1900s. However, it was not officially launched in the commercial market until late 1970s. Over the years, roller skis have undergone a sig nificant change. From the original three-wheeled and hinged framed models, skiers can now enjoy a comfortable ride on lightweight, non-hinged frame with pneumatic wheels.
Roller skis are also becoming an instant hit with the American crowd. According to Idaho Nordic Treasurer Jeff Gasser, about 10 percent of their skiers have their own roller skis.

Monday, 30 June 2008Snowboarders and skiers gathered at the Second Annual US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) Rookie Camp which was held in Park City, Utah.
According to Associate Athletic Director Todd Wyant, the USSA Rookie Camp was implemented mainly to welcome newcomers to the team.
A total of 19 athletes (13 - 46 years old) from the US ski and snowboarding teams participated in the camp which involved team building activities and training. Some of the athletes who participated in the said event were Sarah Hendrickson, Erik Bayindirli, Andi Jo Stump, and Jimmy Discoe.

Sunday, 29 June 2008The Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) in Colorado is already preparing for the coming 2008-09 skiing and snowboarding season by improving the resort's facilities and services.
The resort's improvement project is basically centered on improving the guest's experience. The resort aims to expand their airline service, upgrade the Treasury Center, replace Kids World with Kids Base Cam p, and expand the mountain terrains in Teocalli Bowl.
According to CBMR's VP and Chief Marketing Officer Ken Stone, they are excited to start the improvement project for the coming winter season.

Thursday, 26 June 2008LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand - With good snowfalls and optimum snow making conditions throughout the week, Snow Park NZ will open on Saturday, June 28 for the 2008 season.
New Zealand's premier freestyle park will open all areas of the park with many features, rails, and jumps ready for the skiers and boarders to enjoy. The Woolshed restaurant and bar will also be open, offering a great range of food at all price levels.
To get the 2008 season underway, skiers and boarders will be welcomed with a pie and a stubby or can of V as they board the lift for their first ride up the mountain.
Snow Park's night skiing and riding will commence next week, Tuesday, July 1. New for this season, the night sessions will offer visitors more time on the mountain and a unique experience on snow under floodlights.
Also to celebrate the beginning of the season Snow Park NZ is offering accommodation specials during the school holidays, a 15% price reduction on luxury apartment or ensuite room bookings. Conditions apply.
