Monday, 31 March 2008Montreal, QC - As one of the three marquee ski events at this year’s Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival, the Orage Masters is back and ready to rock Whistler, BC on Saturday, April 12.
After four seasons in Mammoth, CA the “Anti Comp” has moved to Whistler and is packing major party favors. Celebrating the 5th anniversary of skiing’s most well-known head-to-head team based slopes tyle event, the stage has been set.
Making up the competition roster will be team Volkl (the champs from Masters IV), as well as teams from Salomon, Dynastar, Rossignol, 4 Front, Line, K2, and Armada. Each team consists of three men and one female athlete, and with names like Sammy Carlson, Jacob Wester, Phil Casabon, Jen Hudak, Kim Lamarre, Tim Russel, Colby West, Ashley Battersby, Sean Petit, PK Hunder, Sean Decker, Charles Gagnier, Matt Hayward, Mike Riddle, and Justin Dorey - there’s no better place to witness skiing’s best.
The Orage Masters has built a reputation for its off hill antics just as much as its on course mayhem. The Masters is a celebration of the new ski lifestyle and its athletes… aside from the costume clad competitors, the Masters madness will be hosted by the one and only MC extraordinaire and official ski motor mouth, Luke Van Valin (who this year will be accompanied by legendary KISS front man Gene Simmons from time to time). God only knows what will come out of their mouths.
Up for grabs is a prize vault unlike any other event, with snowmobiles from Arctic Cat, all expenses paid vacations to anywhere on planet earth, Wii entertainment systems, Sirius Satellite Radios, Telus Mobile phones with two-year service contracts, and loads of electronic digital goodies from Olympus.
Also new this year, (due to a recent injury) will be the first ever appearance by Orage team rider and X Games gold medalist TJ Schiller, sitting proudly behind the wheel of the snowcat. Out of commission and recovering from surgery, TJ will be acting as the Armada team captain and course design guest of honor.
Adding to the festivities will be the Orage / Freeskier Heaven and Hell Party Presented by Kokanee and Monster energy drink, a two -level fire breathing post event bash taking place at The Savage Beagle on Sunday night, April 13th, in the Whistler village. Last but not least, also worthy to mention are Orage’s 30-man village assault team, the live event webcast on Newschoolers.com, and the on site jumbo-tron insuring that the 250,000 festival goers have no potential to escape the clutches of the Masters.

Friday, 28 March 2008It will no longer be a surprise if Whistler’s Melanie Bernier takes home the women’s overall Canadian National Ski Mountaineering Cup in the upcoming Whistler Backcountry Freeride Jam at the World Ski and Snowboard Festival. After all, the female enthusiast has already proven herself worthy of the title.
Bernier was part of a six-member Canadian Ski Mountaineering team that took plac e in the Alps between Switzerland and France recently. The team took part in the individual race, vertical and long distance events, and set its record at 19th out of the 27 participating countries.
Bernier placed 32nd in the individual race, 40th in the vertical contest, and 23rd in the informal long distance race.

Colorado has been renowned worldwide as the premier destination for winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding. Thus, it only seems logical that William Kane, a nine-year old Lakewood resident would propos
e to State Representative Gwyn Green to officially name skiing and snowboarding as the official state sports.
The kid’s initiative is now recognized as House Joint Resolution 1008. Once approved, this will make skiing and snowboarding as the official winter sports of Colorado.
The renowned winter sports will join the list of other symbols of the state such as the White and Lavender Columbine, the Colorado Blue Spruce, and the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep.

Easter 2008 - the classic end to the winter season held nothing back this year. A wide-ranging start-line of 140 riders kept up the tension during the sessions and in the evening, the live acts and DJs drew in the
crowds to rock Kaprun Castle. The Volvo X OVER Ride selected the fifth “Ruler of the Hill” and gave out prize money worth around 9,000€.
On Saturday, March 22, the Langwied Open Field lay ready for the Freeride Contest with glorious sunshine and 50cm of fresh snow. The conditions could not have been better and over 80 freeriders took up the challenge of the X OVER Ride 2008. Sebastian “Check the Ripper” Hannemann (GER) set the Best Time in the qualifiers and enjoyed a start-to-finish victory in all the heats and in the man-to-man final. He finished his most successful season with his hardest-won victory to date.
Among the snowboarders, the last 20m of the 1.6km run was a showdown between three Austrians. Until he fell, Martin Liebmann was in the lead but was then overtaken by Roli Hofer and Boardercross double world cup winner Mario Fuchs on the home stretch. Local hero Roli Hofer had his eye on the cup and took the Freeride Cross home.
Highly gifted skier Berber Semmelink (NED) came to the Kitzsteinhorn because of the “awesome mountains and cool people” and was immediately selected as Queen of Langwied in her first ever Freeride Contest.
For Sabine Enzinger (AUT), it was “All you need is Langwied” for the fifth time. The boarder rode to her fourth victory in the Open Field with a gradient of up to 40°.
The Switch in the DC Park followed on Easter Sunday, March 23. It was all about “Spin, Style and Airtime”. Michael Kaltenhauser (AUT) shone in the Slopestyle to be a clear victor among the boarders. Roy Kittler (GER), king among the skiers, dueled with Austria’s number one Patrick Hollaus to win the Slopestyle.
The girls also rocked the DC Snowpark and Eveline van der Ber Jeths (NEL) styled her way to victory over Maria Teifel (GER).
Almdudler “Ride with Style”
At the Almdudler “Ride with Style” event, six free skiers transformed themselves into 1950s style riders. The judges based their scores equally on the retro outfits and the tricks performed. The riders’ funky show was rewarded with 2,000€ prize money.
Prize giving in Kaprun Castle
The parties in Kaprun Castle offered the ideal setting to hand over around 9,000€ worth of prize money and celebrate the winners in style. Tension rose as the winner of the greatly desired title of “Ruler of the Hill” was announced. Roli Hofer (AUT) was named best overall rider and ruler of the Kitz - at least until Easter 2009. His victory in the Freeride Cross and second place in the Slopestyle secured him a week at the Nalu Surf Camp. After a hard winter, he’s looking forward to some sun, sea, and surf in Portugal and is sure to be back to defend his title next year.
SOUPSHOP, JERX, ACTIONTEAM and as the crowning glory GUADALAJARA rocked the ancient walls of Kaprun Castle. With the riders’ BBQ and a few Heinekens, the crowds partied into the early hours with DJs Vale, Shantisan, and Chris Rock.
Extras on the Easter Weekend
Volvo doesn’t only stand for safety on the road but off-road and off-piste as well. A must for all freeriders is knowing how to use an avalanche transceiver properly. At the training search on Easter Sunday, Andrei Grasu found and “rescued” the Nokia 5610 XpressMusic in just 0:33 minutes, winning his “rescue” as a prize. Visit www.ice-camp.at.
During the contests, the audience could also be active themselves testing an extensive range of the newest Freeride and Freestyle skis and snowboards from some of the biggest names presented by freeskiers.net.
