The Snowboard Outreach Society recently announced that aside from snowboarding, they will now incorporate skiing in their program to develop kid’s character and self-esteem.
The group also revea ls that they will now be called the Snowsports Outreach Society. Among their first projects under their new name SOS will be taking over the operation of Vail Resorts’ outreach program.
Vail Resorts’ program aims to support about 1,500 on-mountain experiences of Front Range minorities during their diversity program, which will be celebrating its fourth anniversary this season.
According to Vail Resorts’ Bill Jensen, the mountain division and chief operating officer of Vail Mountain, expanding their long-standing partnership with SOS was a very logical step.

A French mountaineering team joined a French expatriate to engage in a sea-supported ski mountaineering expedition to an island in South Georgia. The team is composed of Philippe Batoux, Manu Cauchy (a.k.a
. Doc Vertical) and Lionel Daudet. The French expatriate Isabelle Autissier is a famous sailor. The expedition will continue until early January.
As early as now, the team has completed the first ascent of Sheridan Peak, the sixth ascent of Mt. Paget which is the island’s tallest peak, and the third ascent of Surprise Peak.
The team arrived in Grytviken, and then skied up the Nordensjkord Glacier toward the Allardyce Range and Mt. Paget. Two days after, they moved to the base of Mt. Sheridan and climbed a new route named L'arete des 70 ans.
South Georgia is the largest group of islands in the southern Atlantic Ocean known as the South Georgia group.

KETCHUM, Idaho – When the Jeep King of the Mountain Series, a 15-year-old professional snowsports series, joined forces with The Ski Tour / Basecamp Music Experience, an event that blends music and world-class c
ompetition, the result was the birth of a movement that kicks off in Telluride, Colo. on December 14-16.
Highlights of the weekend-long festival include:
The Jeep King of the Mountain Series will feature four-competitor ski-cross and snowboard-cross format sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Additional snowboard halfpipe and ski halfpipe competitions will showcase the progression of two of the fastest growing segments in winter sports.
Additional host sites for the new series include February 8-10 in Squaw Valley, Calif., and March 14-16 in Sun Valley, Idaho.
The Telluride stop of the Jeep King of the Mountain Series will be televised to a national broadcast audience on December 29, 2007 and January 12, 2008 on CBS Sports.

The Jeep King of the Mountain was established in 1993, and Jeep serves as the event’s title sponsor. The winter series, now in its 15th season, is the sister event to the Mountain Biking World Professional Championships. Academy for Global Exploration (AGE) has just returned from a two-month climbing trip to South Africa’s Western Cape Province! Students climbed at Silvermine Crags in Cape Town, spent two weeks bouldering an
d climbing in world-famous Rocklands (featured in several issues, including the December issue of Climbing Magazine), two weeks climbing the endless walls in Montagu, and smearing the limestone crags in Oudtshoorn.
Future destinations include (fall - spring)*:
AGE, based in Ashland, Oregon, in the beautiful Siskiyou Mountains, spends eight weeks of each semester traveling in a foreign country. Their trips are designed to allow students the opportunity to both familiarize themselves with and participate in the local community and culture. Homestays, community service projects, school visitations, and cultural events are incorporated into each semester's curriculum and itinerary.

BOSTON (BUSINESS WIRE) -Youth Enrichment Service (YES), a non-profit educational institution that offers low- and moderate-income Boston area kids outdoor and practical learning activities, announced the kickoff o
f its 40th annual ski/snowboard program in December.
Since 1968, YES has helped more than 100,000 Boston area kids build self-esteem and foster life-long respect for themselves, others and the environment through participation in outdoor and practical learning activities. Its ski/snowboard program has been recognized as one of the most innovative in the country. This season’s program runs from Dec. 8, 2007 to March 30, 2008.
Fourteen ski areas are partnering with YES for its winter program, including Black Mountain, Jiminy Peak, Killington, Magic Mountain, Mt. Abrams, Pico, Pat's Peak, Loon, Shawnee Peak, Ski Butternut, Sugarbush, Sugarloaf, Sunapee and Wachusett Mountain.
In addition, Ski Market of Boston and Village Ski and Snowboard of Franklin have donated winter sports equipment to be used by YES kids. Other donations have come from organizations such as The Boston Ski and Sports Club, which provided booth space at its annual kick-off event.
As part of this year’s kickoff, YES has brought back last-year’s SUCCESSive program, which encourages kids to benefit from longer-term associations with its ski/snowboard program. Through this program, kids will pay $45 for the first trip (including equipment rentals, transportation, lift tickets and lessons), and $10 for the second trip through fifth trip.
In addition to generous monetary donations that make programs such as SUCCESSive possible, YES expects some 200 adult volunteers to work in its equipment shop, teach lessons and chaperone trips. Furthermore, some 40 teen volunteers who have risen from the participant ranks, will augment these volunteers and gain leadership skills.
According to Mary Williams, president of YES, “Because of participating ski areas’ belief in our mission and generous donation of lift tickets and resources, our entire winter programming is assured. We look forward to an exciting snow sport season ahead in which we can watch our YES kids continue to grow.”
