VanderBeek, Guay Join List of Injured Skiers
TUESDAY, 23 OCTOBER 2007
Kelly VanderBeek joined the list of Alpine Canada skiers hobbled by injury. The World Cup bronze medalist suffered a broken wrist during training and will be required to wear a cast for the next four weeks.
Erik Guay, who is suffering from a sore back, will miss the opening World Cup giant slalom races this weekend in Solden, Austria. Genevieve Soreback, on the other hand, is out for the season recovering from knee surgery.
VanderBeek and Guay, however, are still expected to compete at the World Cup races to be held in Lake Louise in November. Both have won a race last season as well as five podium finishes.
VanderBeek hurt her left wrist during super-giant slalom training at the Farham Glacier in southeastern, B.C. The injury had caused her to alter her training.
Guay of Montreal suffered a herniated disk in his back two years ago. He tweaked it again, but he is still expecting to be ready for the men’s downhill at Lake Louise on November 24.
Alpine Canada’s chief executive officer Ken Read there was no point in sending Guay to the opening races in Austria. He said that he had better stay home and get focused for Lake Louise.
Meanwhile, VanderBeek is suffering from her second injury for the season. She returned home early from a training camp in Chile after having a deep bone bruise and some knee damage from a fall.
VanderBeek took the first World Cup podium finish of her career last season with a third place at the super-G race in Lake Louise and ended the year with six top-10 finishes.
