A Perfect Ski Destination in Lesotho
SATURDAY, 28 JULY 2007
This maybe a quite elaborated goal but the operators of Afri-Ski resort in Africa are very much positive about their project of creating the number one destination for skiers in Africa. And what’s more intriguing about this plan is that, the ski destination is set to be built in the tiny kingdom of Lesotho.
According to Ollie Esplin, manager of Afri-Ski resort, they are looking for ways on how to minimize the risks of meltdown in the Mahlasela Valley in Lesotho.
"When you make a ski slope, especially in Africa, it must be facing south where it receives the least sun," adds Esplin as skiers on a break from neighbouring South Africa snake down the single slope currently in operation.
Last winter was the only second season that the resort was open for business, and yet, there were reports from the owners of the local ski shop and buy and rent equipment along the vicinity that there were already over 5,000 people who came to their shops to buy or rent some ski gadgets. Suffice it to say that indeed, the said resort has been getting very warm welcome from the ski and snowboard fanatics in Africa.
As part of the continuous development of Afri-Ski resort for the delight of the customers, the operators plan on putting additional five ski slopes ranging from medium difficulty level to the easy level. There will also be 100 ski chalets and a high altitude golf course which measures at 3,300 meters above sea level.
The main clients of the resort mostly come from Gauteng and from the other parts of the world. The fee in the resort, which is 400-rand for a four-hour ski lesson, is very costly for the local residents of Africa.
Furthermore, the Afri-Ski resort has also received royal approval by King Letsie III, the king of Lesotho. King Letsie III had in fact, already visited the resort during the annual King’s Cup.
The residents of Lesotho are hoping that the resort will not only provide a boost in the tourism of the country. Rather, it may also create lots of career opportunities for the locals of Lesotho.
