Since traumatic brain injury is one of the leading causes of death in skiing accidents, helmet use should be the logical decision. Yet helmet use is low among skiers, especially adults.The protection h elmets offer is also a debated issue. Industry standards have made the helmet effective only until about 15mph, while skiers easily reach 25-30 mph on the open slopes.
A recent study, though, has proven the increased effectiveness of the helmet with the growing trend of non-traditional skiing landscapes such as gladed areas and terrain parks. The study’s team of researchers, led by Vermont pediatrician and critical care specialist Robert Williams, took to the slopes to see exactly how fast skiers could go in these non-traditional ski areas. Instructed to ride aggressively, the skiers and snowboarders were clocked at speeds below 15 mph 87.6% of the time. It was observed that the variation and change of direction needed to navigate non-traditional ski areas required that skiers kept at slower speeds.
The study will be published in the next issue of Wilderness Medicine magazine.

Bassingbourn claimed second place in this year's Eastern Region Ski Association Summer League. The competition was held at their home turf, Bassingbourn Snowsport Centre.
The event had drawn more th an 130 participants from Welwyn Garden City, Hemel Hempstead, Norwich and Ipswich. Six Bassingbourn team members got medals in the individual slaloms.
Bagging the gold medals are Peter Thompson, Daniel Norton and Daniel Ritsema. Meanwhile, Mike Smith, Ross Lucie-Smith and Benjamin Ritsema are not far behind, taking home silver medals.
Bassingbourn children's team also took part in the competition. Members include Sasha Lucie-Smith, Robbie Lewis, Ben Upton, Jack Conway and Ross Lucie-Smith.

The International Ski Federation (FIS) introduces their new partner, Halti last Tuesday. The Finnish outdoor brand is the FIS new official clothing supplier.
Halti will be supplying the FIS officials with complete outfits, from underwear to headgear, come the 2007/2008 season until the 2009/2010. The said outfits will be part of an exclusive FIS season collection, which will become available to the public market next season.
The Finnish outfitter is headquartered in Vantaa, Finland and has gain popularity in the market mostly for their outdoor apparel. They are also the current official outfitter for the Finnish National teams for Alpine Skiing, Nordic Combined as well as Ski Jumping.

Snow Park NZ’s 2007 season kicked off in Lake Wanaka this weekend with a record number of skiers and snowboarders turning out to enjoy their first tracks on fresh snow.Since last Thursday three w eather systems have hit the region delivering over 40cm of natural snow to the terrain park, the only Wanaka ski field currently open.
Snow Park NZ received a good number of visitors, over 800, during the first three days of opening. Both Saturday and Sunday’s numbers of guests were significantly higher than last year, up 20% and 50% respectively.
Sam Lee Snow Park NZ’s manager said that despite the wintry conditions and the road closures in the area, there were plenty of people keen to get their snow season underway. “The boarders and skiers were delighted to be carving it up on the fresh snow and trying out the new features. It was a great start to the season,” he said.
All areas of the terrain park are open including the ‘Half Pint Park’, a dedicated area for novices. The park has many features in place; these will be added to and refreshed throughout the season.
The average base is 50cm with pockets of deep wintry snow over 2.5 metres in some areas.

Sam Hulbert and Kaitlyn Farrington bag the titles for slopestyle at the Snowboarding's 2007 Chevrolet Revolution Tour. The competition was held at the Windells at Timberline Ski Area.
The Project Gol d Camp was held simultaneously with the competition, where the country's top junior snowboarders were invited to workout with US Snowboarding coaches like Mike Jankowski and Rick Bower. Program participants included Katie Williams and Farrington.
Aside from the slopestyle title Farrington also earned a nomination from the coaches to join the US Snowboarding Rookie Team for the 2008 season, after nailing three Revolution Tour podiums in halfpipe.
Hulbert on the other hand got the overall title after winning both Mt. Bachelor, OR and Okemo, VT.
