WINTER PARK, Colo. - Resi Stiegler (Jackson Hole, WY) overcame a lost ski pole on her second run Wednesday and held onto seventh place to lead five U.S. women into the top 15, six into the first 20 of a Chevrolet
Super Series slalom in sub-zero weather.
For the second day in a row, Slovakian Veronika Zuzulova won the race, this time in 1:29.24 with Therese Borssen of Sweden - who was third in a World Cup slalom Sunday in Aspen - runnerup (1:30.08) in the field of European-heavy World Cup veterans.
Stiegler, third in the first run, finished seventh in 1:31.56. Caitlin Ciccone (Bethlehem, NH) was eighth with a time of 1:32.14. Katie Hitchcock (Sacramento, CA) was 10th with Jenny Lathrop (North Conway, NH) 12th and Kiley Staples (Park City, UT) finished 15th. The temperature at the finish was -1 F. (-19 C.).
"It was so cold, and we had some more snow - maybe five or six inches - overnight, so we had to dig to keep things clear, to get down to the hardpack underneath," said U.S. Women's SL/GS Head Coach Chris Knight. "Resi came out of the 22nd start and was third in the first run, and then skied without a pole for that second run, so we know her speed's there and she's just got to keep things organized and she'll be in there.
"Caitlin had a strong second run, too...and Katie [third Tuesday in the opening SL] had another good day. Kiley and Megan McJames [Park City, UT - 21st in the race] were on the juniors podium, so that's good, too," Knight said.
Thursday, the women begin two days of giant slalom racing.

BEAVER CREEK, Colo. - T.J. Lanning (Park City, UT) and former Junior World Championships downhill bronze medalist Erik Fisher (Sandpoint, ID) clinched start spots Wednesday in a training run before this week's Wor
ld Cup downhill at the VISA Birds of Prey races.
The VISA races will include four days of top-level competition, starting Thursday with a super combined event followed by Friday's DH. Saturday it's giant slalom with slalom completing the weekend on Sunday.
WCSN.com will provide streaming coverage from the races; Thursday, the downhill run will be available at 12:45 p.m. ET with the slalom at 4:15 p.m. ET. Live timing is available via http://livetiming.usskiteam.com.
A snowstorm, which began Monday, wiped out the first official training run Tuesday and course workers cleared about two feet of snow so racers could get a training run Wednesday. The U.S. Ski Team used the run to determine the last two starting slots for Friday's scheduled DH.
"TJ rockets out of eighty-something start [No. 83 start spot] and rockets into ninth place...ninth! Just a stellar run, and that earns him a start spot," said Men's Head Coach Phil McNichol. "And Erik, who has an automatic start in super G as the reigning NorAm champion - but we don't have super G this year at Birds of Prey, qualified for the last open slot. That gives us eight men running Friday...and we'll have eight going [Thursday] in the super combi."
Thursday's U.S. starters: Lanning, Olympic combined champion Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), former combined world champion Bode Miller (Bretton Woods, NH), Steve Nyman (Provo, UT), Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, UT), Scott Macartney (Redmond, WA), Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, NY) and Jimmy Cochran (Keene, NH). The super combined is a one-day event mixing one shortened downhill run and one shortened slalom run.
Friday's downhill, after the last spots were filled, includes: Miller, Nyman, Macartney, Sullivan, Lanning, Fisher, 2006 NorAm DH runnerup Chris Beckmann (Altamont, NY) and JJ Johnson (Park City, UT).
"Y'know, almost everywhere we go, we talk about about how well the organizers prepare the course, but [Chief of Race] Jimmy Roberts and his crews really went above and beyond after that storm to get things ready for today's training run," McNichol said. "We had two feet or more, I don't think it was quite a meter on the course, but they cleared all of it away and didn't just push it into the nets. This was an epic effort that they pulled off."

After two successful issues of the Wir Schanzen Tournee in the Allgäu region, the ski & snowboard contest series has evolved into an inherent part of the German wintersports scene. For the third issue, the o
rganizer, sponsors and partners will come up again with several specials to top the WST 2006, which was won by Friedl May (snowboard) and Xaver Gehring (ski) in all respects. Also in the other categories (girls & kids) important Wir Schanzen points, rewards and a lot of prize money can be won from February 2007 on.
This time the tour is going to be inaugurated by the slopestyle-contest "5ive Gäng Bäng" in Nesselwang, where - in cooperation with Schneestern parks & more and the Alpspitzbahn Nesselwang - a very nice setup will be presented again. People can join the winners at the afterparty until the early morning.
On February the 17th, over 3.000 spectators are going to encourage the snowboarders and freeskiers at the "Iron Night" on the Crystal Ground in Riezlern, who can get familiar with the new park layout during the day and who have perfect conditions for hard action with three rail lines and a kicker line. The legendary best trick contest as well as the infamous Funk-afterparty are going to top off the Wir Schanzen-highlight.
At the "Night on Snow", that takes place on March, 3rd in Pfronten, snowboarders & freeskiers will meet FMXers and Skidoo-freestyle riders again to celebrate a spectacular contest.
Also the live-act is going to outstrip the "Massive Töne", who rocked the vibes last time. The preparations for the setup are running at full speed at Schneestern parks & more, who are also responsible for the setup at the Air & Style 2006, to provide an exciting and innovative setup for the "Night on Snow", that offers unequalled opportunities in Germany.
At the "A-Man Slopestyle" on March 17th the riding community can expect a monster-kicker with a fresh rail-line and the usual relaxed atmosphere, for which the "A-Man" competitions are famous for six years now. The awarding ceremony as well as the following live concert in Memmingen is also worth catching.
The last competition of the Wir Schanzen Tournee 2007 will be "The Barbecue" at the easter weekend on April, the 7th on the Fellhorn/Oberstdorf. All riders are invited to a relaxed season-finish with steaks, live music, hard rail-action and a lot of surprises. After the several past mottos like Rock’n Roll, Country, etc you can be looking forward to the upcoming contest-style.

KUUSAMO, Finland - High winds, which forced cancellation of a ski jumping event the night before, and rain forced officials Sunday to cancel a nordic combined sprint World Cup.
"I don't know if they w ere the same winds because they were from a different direction," Head Coach Lasse Ottesen said, "but we could see early on this wasn't happening. We never got to take the trial round [of jumping] and then, after a delay, everything was canceled."
The next combined competitions are scheduled in Lillehammer, Norway - where Ottesen won a silver medal in Olympic jumping in 1994 for Norway - after being moved from Trondheim because of poor snow conditions. Ottesen said officials were considering moving the sprint to Lillehammer but a final decision would not be made for a day or two.

LAKE LOUISE, Alberta - Defending super G world champion Bode Miller (Bretton Woods, NH) had the top U.S. result Sunday in sub-zero cold, placing 14th behind surprise winner John Kucera of Canada in the first World
Cup SG of the season.
Kucera's first World Cup win came in 1:29.70, putting him six-hundredths of a second ahead of Austrian Mario Scheiber. The temperature was about eight degrees below zero (-22 C.).
Miller was timed in 1:31.03 with Steve Nyman (Provo, UT), the only other U.S. skier to break into the top 30, finishing 20th (1:31.26) in the bitter cold.
"It was chilly out there, but not too bad. It was definitely colder on the racers than coaches standing on the hill," speed Head Coach Chris Brigham said. "And it's supposed to go down to -30 [C - about minus 22 F.] tomorrow as the women come in [for two DHs and a super G].
"We've certainly learned through the years this isn't a hard hill, but it is hard to ski fast...and it's very unforgiving. Make one little mistakes and you can lose a lot of time, and that means guys get packed in there - 10, 12 guys within three-tenths of a second...small mistakes can really hurt you here.
"Bode skied well both days but he also had some troubles, too. And Steven [Nyman, who had the fastest training time Thursday and led the U.S. men Saturday, finishing in a tie for 17th] skied great all week. But they were both very fast and very competitive in some sections..."
The men head next to Beaver Creek, CO, for the annual VISA Birds of Prey races, starting Thursday with a super combined and then a downhill Friday, giant slalom Saturday and slalom Sunday.
