Elementary School Children Get Hands-On Lesson With the snow piling high and ice accumulating this winter, it was no wonder some people fractured and broke bones. Why is it that some people can fall without breaking a bone? How does an orthopedic surgeon fix a broken bone?

As part of Health and Safety Week, Dr. Alan Nasar, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute (AOSMI), Freehold,
New Jersey, recently visited the fourth grade classes of Ms. Jane Dayne at Hillel Yeshiva Elementary School, Ocean, NJ, a Hebrew day school where he was once a student, to talk about bones.

Dr. Nasar is a senior staff member at Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute, which provides a range of services, including sports medicine, joint replacement, fracture care, spine care, work injury care, hand and wrist care, physiatry, foot and ankle care, and osteoporosis care to the residents of Freehold and Monroe Townships and surrounding towns in Monmouth and Middlesex Counties. When he visited the students at Hillel Yeshiva Elementary School, he explained that an orthopedic surgeon specializes in musculoskeletal health, which includes muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, and joints. He reminded students that a big part of protecting their bones is staying active; eating the right foods and getting enough calcium and vitamin D; using a helmet for bicycling, rollerblading, skiing, and snowboarding; using a seatbelt, and taking extra precautions on trampolines and monkey bars, which pose a high risk of injury for bones.

Broken bones can be repaired in a variety of ways, depending on the type and severity of the break, with casting or splinting, manipulation, or surgery. For one type of surgical procedure, the students, themselves, had a hands-on opportunity to actually drill into an imitation bone and insert a rod.

Dr. Nasar says, “The kids drilled holes and placed screws in the bone, fixating an imitation femur provided by Michael Feldman of Innovative Orthopedics - Biomet.”

Mrs. Marta Meyer, who coordinated Health and Safety Week at Hillel with Mrs. Rifka Levovitz, says, “About 50 fourth graders were present, and Dr. Nasar had their attention the entire time!”

Rabbi Avi Bodlander, assistant principal at Hillel, said, “Dr. Nasar’s presentation was an important part of the education Hillel Yeshiva School provides. The safety of our students is paramount for everyone here; and Dr. Nasar’s interactive presentation, both entertaining and educational, added an important aspect to our annual Health and Safety Week.”

Dr. Nasar’s presentation was part of Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute’s ongoing efforts to improve the lives of the children in the Freehold and Monroe township communities. “An early education is key to a life of good health and safety. I welcomed this opportunity to play a part in this very important promotion of children’s awareness of their health and safety,” explained Dr. Nasar.

Park City Lodging There are many Park City lodging options to consider when planning your next ski vacation to Park City, Utah. Hotels, condos, bed and breakfasts and even vacation homes are available year round. The high season is of course during the winter, from mid-November to mid-April.

If you can spare no expense, ski-in/ski-out luxury, 4-star accommodations is the way to go. When staying on the s
lopes, everything you need is usually right there at the base of mountain and ski resort. All three resorts in town including Deer Valley, Park City and The Canyons all have a variety of accommodations right on the slopes.

As far as Park City lodging options go, Deer Valley Resort has some of the most luxurious accommodations in town. There is the infamous Stein Eriksen Lodge and The Chateaux at Silver Lake as well as many other hotels, condos and private homes available for rental. The Silver Lake Village, at mid-mountain, has 26 properties alone. Prices can go as high as $4,000/night or more for a 4-bedroom suite, such as at the Chateaux.

The Park City Mountain Resort's closest hotel to the slopes is the Marriot Mountainside. This is a good choice if you are planning to do most of your skiing at Park City. It's right at the base of the slopes with ski-in/ski-out access and very close to Main Street for apres-ski activities later in the evening. The Marriot is also located at the resort's base village, which has lots of shops, restaurants and even a skating rink.

The Canyons Resort has several hotels in their ski village. Most people like the Grand Summit Hotel which is the closest hotel to the gondola, the main lift for mountain access. The Grand Summit is a 4-diamond, AAA resort and has hotel rooms, studios as well as one, two and three-bedroom suites. Other lodging options at The Canyons include the Sundial Lodge, Silverado Lodge, The Westgate and Miner's Club hotel condos.

Like Bed and Breakfasts? There are several all within walking distance to Park City's Main Street, the center of town and evening entertainment. Bed and Breakfast's are the best choice if you will be skiing at the Park City Resort and prefer this style of lodging. Some of the popular B&Bs include the Washington School Inn, the Old Town Guest House and the Woodside Inn.

Looking for some cheaper Park City lodging options? No problem. There are a few places around town that offer lower rates if you're on a budget. Most of the cheaper accommodations are located at Kimball Junction, about a 10-15 minute ride (depending on traffic) from the center of Park City. There you will find a Hampton Inn and Suites, Holiday Inn Express and a Best Western Landmark Inn. The only "cheap" place closer to the center of town is the Chateau Apres Lodge. It is a no-frills place for sure, but you can walk to the Park City Resort instead of having to drive yourself or take the bus from Kimball Junction.

Quiksilver Wir Schanzen Shines at the Stubai Jam Already at the accreditation in the morning there was a big run on the starting tickets. Because of the many people willing to join the contest the starting field of 80 riders was extended to 100.

As the riders had arrived at the Moreboards Stubai Zoo, a perfectly shaped setup waited for them with three kickers in line, rails, boxes and other jib obstacles.

In the beginning
strong wind made it impossible to open the kickerline. The safety of the riders goes first and so the girls´ and kids´ contest took place on the jib-line. Nevertheless the boys and girls really stepped on it and showed a high level. Especially the ski kids´ category was highly competitive. In the end it was Lucas Mangold (GER) to stand on top of the podium. In the category of snowboard kids Andre Höflich (GER) had a smile all over his face. The freeski girl Sabrina Cakmakli (GER) and the snowboard girl Diana Sadlowski (POL) triumphed.

Just in time for the Men´s contest the wind died away and the kickerline was ready for top class ski and snowboard tricks. The spectators could watch an extremely high riding level and the judges had the most difficult jobs of all on this day. In the end Yannic Lerjen (CH) could convince the judges and could celebrate his victory in the ski category. Patrick Wörle (AUT) showed the best style and the coolest tricks in the snowboard category and could win the contest.

But the riders were nowhere near tired and showed challenging tricks on the Transfer Kicker at the Red Bull Best Trick Session. With his Switch 720 Japan Mike Hauser (AUT) could take home the Red Bull IPod Touch. The snowboarder Christoph Weberhofer (AUT) is becoming a specialist in Red Bull Trick Sessions and after his victories at the first two tour stops he could also win this session on the Stubai Glacier.

The riders and spectators enjoyed a fantastic day in relaxed atmosphere, with cool sound and tasty hamburgers. In the afternoon the glacier parking area counted 100 smiling faces minimum who met again in the evening to celebrate the legendary Stubai Jam Afterparty at the Blue Chip in Innsbruck. The beats of DJ Em and the Swiss Clas Sound made the people madly enthusiastic and so they danced, drank and partied all the night long. A decent icing on the cake of the Stubai Jam!

For all of you who were not able to take part, on March 27th you will have the next chance to compete. At the Happy Shred at the Quiksilver Crystal Ground at the Kleinwalsertal a day full of sun, firn and good vibes will be waiting for you. The tension is increasing because at the fourth and last qualification contest there will not only be the decision of who will be invited to the Quiksilver Wir Schanzen final in April.

It is the moment of truth for all people who love Hot Dogs because there will be a competitive Hot Dog eating. The starting tickets for the snowboard and ski contest will be restricted to 80! So quickly apply on www.quiksilver-wirschanzen.de and transfer the starting fee – that is the best way to get a guaranteed starting ticket and on top of that a BBQ for free!

Spring Sessions 2010 Finally it is spring again! Sun, firn and pleasant temperatures – what more could one desire? There is plenty of snow on the Stubai Glacier, but the power of the sun already shows its impact: You can learn new tricks on soft landings, get the shape of your goggle smoothly burnt into your face and your T-Shirt flaps in the warm wind. Springtime is just around the corner and so is the beginning of the snowpark season on the Stubai Glacier. Until the end of May the MOREBOARDS Stubai Zoo not only offers three kickers in line, but also countless jib obstacles. Everything is ready for a good session with your best friends and much action in the snowpark. The snow conditions on the Stubai Glacier are ideal until June – and it´s only 45 minutes from Innsbruck!

The Stubai Jam as the third stopp of the Quiksilver Wir Schanzen will take place on March 13th 2010. Despite the snowfalls of the past weeks spring fever settles amongst the riders. Fun at riding is definitely the focus of this contest and at the afterparty in the evening at the Blue Chip in Innsbruck the Swiss Clastsound will put the heat on everybody.

In cooperation with MOREBOARDS you can check out next season´s snowboards of Lib Tech, Gnu and Roxy on the March 21st on the Stubai Glacier. The material test is free of charge and a good possibility to get a first overview of the latest hardware trends.

From April 9th to 10th the Shred Sessions will stop over at the MOREBOARDS Stubai Zoo. Under the patronage of Nicola Thost all interested Snowboarders are invited to join this Coaching Camp. The participants will be divided into small groups to be able to learn new tricks and spend a great time with and under the guidance of skilled riders such as Quiksilver Pro Felix Georgii. You can get two nights accommodation, lift ticket, lunch package, coaching as well as a photo- and videosession for EUR 159.00.

There is no spring without an extensive Barbecue! Therefore steaks, sausages and other delicacies will wait on the Barbecue for you – two days through on April 24th and 25th. Cool sound at the parkbase and goodie-for-trick sessions will complete the relaxed days at the Zoo.

At the Snowbroader Video Weekend from May 08th to 09th a snowboard movie will be produced. All interested riders meet on Saturday morning to film their own “parts” in the movie together with the snowbroader.eu crew.
