Mogul Skiing - Learning the Basics Moguls or Bumps are evident in all Ski Areas. Though there are slopes without Bumps, there will come a time when this area will be soon filled with Bumps formed by skiers who are making turns on the same slope. Eventually, you will have to ski around and over them. Therefore, it is imperative to know how to deal with Bumps. Take a look at some basic techniques to aid you as you get started in Bump Skiing.

Know how to turn over bumps. This is one of the important things you should keep in mind. To make turns over Bumps, start with a good traverse stance and begin skiing. When you get near the Bump, bend your hips and apply pressure on your outside Ski. At the time when your are passing over the top of the Bump, plant your Ski Pole on the Bump's edge in order to give support as you extend your legs, direct your Skis in the new path, and finally turning over the Bump. At this point, you are already on the other side of the Bump. Finish the turn by shifting your weight and applying pressure on your downhill Ski.

To make turns around small Moguls scattered on easy and intermediate slopes, start with a good traverse stance. Shift your weight on your downhill Ski, and then ski. When you get near a Mogul, get ready in planting your downhill Ski Pole on its front side. Turn around the Bump and make sure to shift your weight on your outside Ski. Quickly push your hand forward after planting your Ski Pole on the Bump in order to pull your arm through. Turn around the Mogul completely and try this Drill again, this time in other direction. Practice turning on small Bumps and if you already feel confident, you can move on in making turns around slightly bigger Moguls on steep slopes.

To make a swivel turn, stand on a Mogul and merely lower your hips. Take note that the Tips and Tails of Skis should not be touching the Snow. As another important guideline, keep your Skis close to each other as you turn over the Bump. Push your shins forward and turn your upper body towards the course of the turn. At this point, plant your Ski Pole down the fall- line so that you will tend to reach downhill. Make sure that it stays vertical as you turn. Extend your legs and rotate your feet.


Generally speaking, there is no Bump- free Ski area. Thus, learning the fundamental skills in Mogul Skiing is very important. You also need some practice in order to master Skiing in Bumps. You will surely have a great time once you become skillful in Mogul Skiing.
