Vermont Skiing
Vermont is famous for its distinct regional weather, diverse geography, and four distinct seasons. Interestingly, Vermont is more popular in offering an exceptional Skiing experience.
Vermont, with its 4,500 acres, 900 trails, and 150 lifts, has more than 20 alpine ski resorts and about 50 cross-country touring centers. It accommodates all levels of Skiing - from the simple snow training and complex method of downhill sliding, to the calm cross country spree riding a snowshoe and ski to the experts’ expeditions.
As New England’s winter sports capital, Vermont boasts of its superb Cross-Country Skiing or snowshoeing. Furthermore, it significantly revived the Cross-Country and Telemark Skiing. Snowshoeing had grown popularity too with the state’s pioneering efforts. Bill Koch, the first U.S. Olympic gold medal winner in Nordic Skiing, is from Vermont. Great alpine skiers Andrea Meade, Suzy Chaffee, Betsy Snite, Billy Kidd, and the Cochranes, are also from Vermont.
Vermont’s top Skiing destinations include the southern state’s self-contained, condo-dependent resort community of Stratton. It has well-known premiere alpine amenities, which include a carefully groomed slope, several proficient lifts, and an authentic faux Bavarian village. Basically, Stratton is suitable for those who do not look much on the challenge of Skiing but more on appreciating the nature while relaxing.
Okemo, another eminent Vermont destination, proves its “the difference is snow” tagline for having an extensive snowmaking capacity which, like Stratton, was intensively and meticulously groomed. Okemo is also the home of the highest vertical drop in southern Vermont. It recently added a more thrilling terrain at Jackson Gore.
Smugglers’ Notch, which is situated on the other side of Mount Mansfield from the stylish and up-to-date Stowe, is another Vermont’s highlight. It was said that beginning mid-1970s, Smugglers’ Notch resolved to muse on the overlooked and undeserved family market. Over the past years, it had been referred to as the undisputed king of Mount Mansfield, though it in fact covers three separate mountains. It is basically an all-inclusive winter sports camp where family members do their separate activities by day and join by night in the activity-laden base village.
Another traditional favorite is Mount Snow, which has West Dover as base community. Having spent approximately $6 million for maintenance and improvement, as well as $3.5 million for snowmaking-system enhancement, Mount Snow is now said to be a perfect Vermont Skiing destination.
Self-proclaimed “Beast of the East,” Killington offers the best variety of terrain, the biggest resort which envelops seven mountains, the most widespread snowmaking system, and the highest vertical drop. These features keep Killington lively day and night.
