Ski Mountaineering

Ski Mountaineering Skiing and Mountaineering, when done separately, can offer a unique and exhilarating outdoor experience. But there is an outdoor activity in which you can have the best of both worlds. This is called Ski Mountaineering.

In its simplest form, Ski Mountaineering involves climbing a snowy mountain with Mountaineering Crampons attached to your boots and when you reach the summit, you will remove the crampons, put the Skis on, and ski your way down the mountain. But this is sometimes not the case, as there are Ski Mountaineering destinations which are not mountains but steep slopes. That is why Ski Mountaineering is sometimes used interchangeably with ski touring, which is skiing through the mountains.

Obviously, you need to master the different skills and techniques needed in both Skiing and Mountaineering. Climbing a mountain covered in snow or going down a steep descent is certainly not an easy job. You may want to go Cross Country Skiing and learn how to tackle trials of varying levels of difficulty. Ski Mountaineering is so physically- and mentally demanding that it is crucial to be fit and proficient in the ins and outs of the two activities. Understanding the risks involved and learning how to respond to different situations are also important aspects of this activity.

Using the right pieces of gear and equipment is crucial in Ski Mountaineering. A good pair of Skis, boots designed for Alpine Skiing, and layers of clothing are essential items. You also need a pair of skins or crampons that will enable you to go uphill.

Never underestimate what nature can throw at you. When participating in an outdoor activity which involves large packs of snow and ice, make sure to be extra careful as an avalanche may come your way and put your life in danger. Bring an avalanche transceiver, a probe, and a shovel with you so you will be saved and be able to help save lives should an avalanche occur in the area.

If you are skilled in Off Piste Skiing and mountain climbing and you want to have a different kind of experience that can provide the exhilaration of Skiing and the satisfaction of reaching new heights, then try Ski Mountaineering. Know the different aspects of the activity, plan thoroughly, and be ready to have a blast in the snowy mountains!
