LEKI Skiing Gear 2007 - 2008 Overview
LEKI, the world’s leading manufacturer of ski, hiking and trekking poles had its start in Kircheim, Germany as a hobby of its founder, Karl Lenhart, an airframe mechanic and avid skier. Lenhart believed aluminum would make a superior ski pole compared to the heavy steel models available in the late 1940’s. After successfully creating light- weight poles for his friends, in 1954, the hobby became a full time business.
LEKI originated the use of nylon webbing for straps and created plastic molded grips and baskets in place of metal and leather. Additionally, Lenhart developed an aluminum tempering process that produces pole shaft with incomparable strength, durability, and reliability. In 1984, Klaus Lenhart, Karl’s son assumed leadership and shortly there after developed the first dual- component grip. He is also responsible for improving adjustable pole-locking technology and grip innovations such as the Trigger “Click-In” system and COR-TEC, a material made of real cork and latex.
As the ski market continued to flourish, LEKI began manufacturing hiking poles primarily for European mountain guides. The concept of using two poles as means of relieving stress on knee joints and the lower back appealed to climbers who also saw benefits in performance and safety. LEKI poles eventually caught on with the general hiking and trekking population that recognized and appreciated the preventive health benefits as well as the climbing support and stabilizing effects. In 1990, LEKI USA was incorporated. The North American market has embraced the company’s line of alpine, Nordic, back country, mountaineering, Nordic walking, and trekking poles. Like their European counterparts who have been loyal to LEKI for nearly five decades, North American outdoor enthusiasts know and appreciate LEKI quality and value.
Trigger S
There are bindings for your feet, so why not hands? LEKI, the world's leading manufacturer of Ski, Trekking, and Nordic Walking poles, introduces the Trigger S grip/strap system. The advanced hand-to-pole interface, which LEKI calls a Ski Pole Binding, will be available for delivery to ski specialty retailers nationwide in fall 2007. Trigger S is a completely new mechanism for strap attachment and release that provides Alpine recreational skiers and racers with convenience, performance and releasability.
Trigger S features direct power transfer from hand to pole plant. The hand is firmly connected to the pole with a removable Power strap containing a small yet fiercely strong corded loop that attaches to the back of the pole grip. The pole grip features an auto release system which functions like a ski binding and releases under pressure. It also has a manual release button, helpful when removing poles for the lift ride up.
The adjustable Power strap firmly attaches onto any glove or mitten with a hook and loop closure and is included with the purchase of the Trigger S. The integrated loop that attaches to the pole grip so firmly is made of Dyneema, one of the world's stronger fibers used in parachute cord and yacht racing. It has a breaking strength of 500 lbs., is impervious to water and is resistant to ultraviolet light.
Poles Feature LEKI "Positive Angle"
The Trigger S grip itself, besides the new hand-to-pole interface, features LEKI's proprietary ergometrically designed forward "Positive Angle" - the grip has a built-in 10-degree angle to properly position pole plants while keeping the upper body quiet. The core of the grip is also partially hollow to reduce weight by 15-20 percent.
Trigger S poles, named to evoke images of fine cars like the Porsche Carrera S and Cayman S, will retail for a suggested price of $69.95 to $149.95. An optional Trigger-ready glove or mitten is available at an additional cost of $89.95 to $169.95. The Trigger S will be offered on the following poles for 2007-08:
- Flair S (women's) - 14 mm narrow profile HTS 6.5 series aluminum, from 42-50-in.
- Speed S - 16 mm AirFOIL HTS 6.5 series aluminum shaft, from 44-54-in.
- Carbon 12.0 S - 12 mm, tapered shaft, from 44-54-in.
- Vision Viper S - 16 mm AirFOIL HTS 6.5 series aluminum upper shaft fused to a 10 mm carbon lower shaft, from 44-54-in.
"The Trigger S will provide 'click and go' convenience. No more fumbling with pole straps when getting on or off lifts," said Greg Wozer, LEKI USA vice president. "Skiers can either use the system with their existing gloves or mittens, or purchase Trigger-ready handwear."
