Most of the Alpine resorts close in late April or early May. Here in the Pyrenees it is slightly earlier - around the middle of April. In most places the close date is determined by a lack of customers rather than a lack of snow - from spring onwards people are thinking about going to the beach rather than skiing (this has always baffled me, but then I'd happily ski all year round and beaches just don't do it).
When thinking about where to go, higher is better - in April the lower slopes will often be getting patchy, and you may need to take a lift down at the end of the day in some places. A number of Alpine resorts also offer skiing in the summer on glaciated terrain, for example Tignes or Les Deux Alpes in France. Other places to consider are the Trois Vallees (3 Valleys) resorts, Val D'Isere, Avoriaz, Chamonix, Zermatt, Verbier, Les Arcs. All these and many others will have great skiing in April - I have skied at most of them in April and never had a bad week, whereas I have had plenty of poor snow weeks skiing in early January.
Myself, I'll be going to Engelberg, Switzerland in March (7th-14th)
Can't wait to experience a week of skiing both groomed runs and off-piste about 3 kilometres above sea-level, and then ending each day with a little after-ski.
Damn, a cold beer sure taste great after being out in the fresh air and the snow all day long!
Skiing is one of the great sports you'll never forget. At first you may find it difficult but as times past you'll learn it automatically. All you need is determination to learn about this sport.

Chamonix for me, late march. always go late, better weather, beter prices, and quieter.
Couldn't agree more. In fact I plan a jaunt to Chamonix after our Andorran close date in mid-April.
