Hey guys first off I would like to say hi to everyone, and then ask for help!!

I have never been skiing in my life am 30 and my girlfirend want me join her, and as she is Finnish more than accomplished! What can I do to prepare physically and where should we go? We live in China, so I was thinking Japan?? but dont want to spend thousands and have a poor holiday, or for her not to have fun also!!

As for equipment I think she can help me out, any help is really really appreciated.

Oh we will go alone for the first few days as all of her friends are very skilled skiiers, and I dont really need to slow oll of them down to my level, especially as one is a real smart arse and love to see people fail!

I just replied to your other thread here (and recommended Japan)

Your girlfriend won't have any trouble at all having fun when skiing in Japan. They have some very good ski areas, both for on- and off- piste skiing. (And they have pistes that newbies won't have any problem enjoying)

I do know what it's like being a first timer, and it's not all that funny feeling you're slowing others down. So, going alone with your girl the first days, is probably a good idea. (You'll probably be able to relax more too, knowing you can take your time)

But that one friend of hers, who is a smart-ass and loves seeing others fail, doesn't really seem all that charming. And people who actually get lots of joy to see others fail, well, they are probably not all that smart to begin with.

So, don't give a damn what such people say, and have fun skiing!

Hi,

Equipment wise you will be able to rent the skis, boots and poles, but you will need to take warm weatherproof clothing, gloves, eyewear, hat etc. You don't need to spend a ridiculous amount of money, but try and get a decent shell - Gore Tex or similar jacket and pants. It is more important that it is windproof and preferably waterproof than it being warm - you can layer thermals, fleeces and other warm clothes underneath. On a cold day I'll wear about 6 layers.

Make sure you book ski lessons - it sounds like you plan to anyway. Letting your girlfriend teach you will only lead to arguments. Once you've had a bit of instruction you'll be able to start skiing together as long as she is patient enough to go slowly.

Wow, do I know what you're talking about!  I started skiing at 30 as well (49 now) and it was not easy going and like you I was with a group that skied really well.  All the equipment advice, location advice and most importantly the advice about booking a leason is right on the money but being a late learner I offer one bit of sage wisdom, "take your time".  Skiing is not as easy as it looks and you will fall and feel very stupid but it's all part of the learning process.  However if you love the mountains and the snow it is well worth it.  I will add one thing, bite the financial bullet and book a couple of private leasons.  It will help you feel more confident and get you out with your girlfriend a lot quicker.  GOOD Luck, have a great time and don't try to ski the summit on your first (or second) day!
