Hi everyone!
I'm really into skiing, even though I sadly can't do it too much, just like once a year during holidays and sometimes in a snow hall, which is somewhat crappy :( The snow in that hall on the little "park" there is like concrete...
Also for now, I only did the skiing you start with when you are young and go out on the piste first with your dad, I almost always stayed on the piste and so on...Last holiday we did some off-piste skiing and some jumps, which was a really great experience and I would really love to get into it a bit deeper.

The first problem are my skis, they are very nice for piste skiing and I can go down anywhere pretty fast and I feel very confident on piste, but once I left it, it wasnt too great.
My skis are super-heavy and without twin tips (racing only :S), so I will need new ones for the park :)
As I am still a student I wouldn't like to spend too much, so I will keep my boots etc.

Which skis would you recommend? I love Völkl and K2 skis, but I just don't know which will fit me. On the one hand I would like to jump in parks, but also in backcountry and I'd like to just go into deep powder and trees.
Völkls Mantras look great, but they are kind of expensive..The Fujatives are not that expensive, but K2 says on their website that they are not too powder-ish...
Which would you recommend for both, park and powder? (I also own a kite, so I will definately do powder as well)
K2s "Bad Seeds" look like a mixture, any experiences with that maybe?

Next problem are the bindings, can I keep mine, or should I get new ones for park 'n powder? If you recommend getting new ones, which are nice without being too expensive?

Another thing I thought a lot about was protection, I will get a helmet for sure (I burrowed one last holiday when we jumped and it really boosts confidence), but I would also like a back protector (Need one for mountainboard-kiting anyways), can anyone recommend anything, or does anyone have any experiences with a certain back protector at all?

//edit: Uh oh, I forgot something, how long should my skis be? I'm 1,78 metres and weigh around 60kg.

Okay, I guess that's it, I hope anyone can help me out and I don't bother too much, I searched quite a while in the forums and read a lot :)
Oh and sorry for my english, it's not my native language sadly.

best regards,
K.D.

I recommend you to go to any shop in your city, or if you want something cheap you can look for skies from 05-07 seasons(they re really cheaper!) or maybe skies that re not new) But if they're already used you must pay attention to its:
1) nose and tail- they may exfoliate (flake)
2) back side (place you ski on)
3) edges (i dont know how it is in english((()
It would be better you to take someone well expiriensed with you to help to choose.
But the best way is to go to a good big shop where specialists can help you)
p.s sorry for my english.... i know that it is terryble...... i'm just a dumb russian student)))
p.p.s you say english is not your native language. What is yours native language?

Hey!
Thanks for the reply and the tips, that's very useful to know.
Hmm I sadly don't really have anyone with too big knowledge around me, but I think I know how to pay attention to the stuff you told me about :)
Anyhow, I'll go to a big store, as you advised and I also think there's that little shop around with people in it that really know what they are doing.

Oh and I figured that K2s Public Enemys seem to be pretty nice. I read only positive stuff about them concerning both, off-piste and park. And they are not tooo expensive, though it's still quite an investion :/

Btw, your english is okay :P It was very understandable, thanks again mate!
My native language is german and I'm also still a student :>;

Does anyone have any tips for my binding-problem? :/
When I looked on i-net shops, I found out that PEs mostly come with Marker bindings and I read in the forum that quite a few use them. Now I wonder if there is a big difference in Marker 11,12 and so on, because there's quite a big difference in price.

Best regards,
K.D.

Hi,

Almost any twintip will be pretty good in powder - they're soft, not overly shaped, wide underfoot, and usually worn long compared to say a slalom ski. However, a wider ski will generally be better for powder, harder in the park. The PEs are a good compromise if you want to go with K2 - they are wide enough for the powder whereas the Fujatives are a bit too skinny (and too soft IMO). Going any wider, like the Seth Vicious, will make the park and pipe hard work.

Marker bindings are not good for freestyle, and are not great for powder. They pre-release far too easily (I'm 75kgs and have them set at 10 and they still pre-release), and if your boots are a little worn at the toes they will rock around. There is no height adjustment which could fix this. I think the only difference between the model numbers is how high the DIN settings will go.

I would recommend the Look/Dynastar/Rossignol type bindings for freestyle, and a lot of my colleagues (way better freestylers than me) say the same - they keep your feet attached to the skis a lot better.

Alright, thanks for the great help!!
Sorry for the late reply, I was at my girlfriend's over the weekend.

Think I'll give the dynastar PX12s attached to the PEs a try :)
There's just one new question coming up...
I wonder for what length I should go?

Longer seems better for powder and I see a lot people in freestyle videos for example also with longer skis.
I'm 178cm tall and weigh like 60-65, so I wonder for which size I should go?
PEs seem to be available to 179cm as a maximum.
I always prefered a bit smaller skis until now, since I felt that they spin and turn easier...
But I have never done too much park and powder action so far, so maybe I just don't know :)

What would you recommend? I'm thinking about 174 so far...

Best regards and thanks again!
K.D.

174 should be fine, or at 60kgs maybe little shorrter. Longer will float a bit better, shorter will turn faster. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner I haven't had much internet access lately.

Hey!
Thanks for the reply, it really doesn't matter how soon or late it comes, since winter's over :)
Best would be if I could try them, but I'm almost sure that I'll go for 169ers now, because I've always liked a bit shorter skis and I guess I need spinning more than floating :)
Thanks again!

best regards,
K.D.
