IMO? You need to be warm. Period. My first time skiing was this past weekend, and short of buying a balaclava, waterproof gloves, and a pair of goggles, everything I wore was stuff I already owned, and I was perfectly warm in sub-20-degree weather (and I'm a cold person). You're going to want a wicking baselayer (UnderArmour or similar), something fleece or similar on top, a windbreaker layer. Don't go buy new and fancy stuff. Do you have a winter coat of ski-jacket styling (leave the peacoat at home)? Snowpants? Hat and gloves and some sort of neckwarmer? Then you're already in business. You could run out to REI and spend hundreds of dollars on specialized "skiing" clothing, but why as long as you're smart about using the cheaper stuff?

@aimee, thanks for sharing the link.. these are indeed the essentials in skiing. List of proper gears and ski suits provided in the post are very helpful.
