What should I do to get fit for skiing? Do I need to concentrate on a particular part of my body?

For general recreational skiing, good aerobic fitness is the best thing to concentrate on, ie. running, swimming, cycling etc. If you wanted to get fit for competitive skiing I would concentrate on core strength and stability - free weights, squats, plyometrics. Actually, I have just bought a unicycle, with the aim of improving my ski fitness - balance, leg strength, core strength, stability - all in one gadget.

Mine was 75 Euros. I could have got one for 50 but went for one with a huge chunky off road tire cos our road is full of potholes (and it looked cool in the shop ).

I agree...cardio is very important for overall fitness and better performance in any sport. It increases lung capacity, blood flow, and endurance. Also, anything that can help strengthen your core and improve your balance (yoga, Pilates, martial arts ) certainly helps. But if you can ride a unicycle, you can probably do most anything! That looks tough to do.

I didn't say I could ride it yet . I've been practising and I can go a long way in a straight line. Turning and stopping are trickier though. A bit like people learning to ski.

This is a link to an article about a man who rode a unicycle up Whiteface Mountain in NY. I know, I'm totally getting off the subject, but you had me at "unicycle". Keep us posted on how you're doing.

Great article. Something to aim for maybe. My unicycling has been on hold a bit this week due to the amount of fresh snow - I'm not ready for powder unicycling yet, and the car park where I've been practising is pretty deep in the white stuff right now. Not that I'm complaining of course - the skiing is obviously where it's at.

Lucky you...it's been nothing but rainy or warm weather around here; good for ducks, bad for skiers. I'm praying for snow...supposed to ski with friends this Friday. But if not, can I borrow your unicycle! I promise to have it back to you when your snow melts.

Practice everyday and concentrate first about body balance. Skiing is like riding in a bicycle you should first balance your body, but before you ride, make sure that you have an idea about safety skiing. Just try this one: http://www.abc-of-skiing.com/skisafety.asp

Great advice dude. That's all good for us. You must hardwork on it to maintain a good playing skill. You must focus on your body movements and enjoy every ride.Cheers!
