Are you looking for variety, contact with nature, peace, possibilities of walking, cycling and climbing, cosy accommodations, and excellent gastronomy? Then you are in the right place! Al Plan/San Vigilio can offer you everything. The touristic center in the middle of the Dolomites and its nature reserve are the first address for lovers of culture and sport.
The Dolomites, which are often described as the most beautiful creation of nature, surround Al Plan/San Vigilio like a crown. The idyllic mountain village with its 1,500 inhabitants is situated in the green and gentle Marebbe hollow, a branch of Val Badia, at 1,201 m above sea level. Lush coniferous forests, high peaks and the soft, hilly alpine pastures model the landscape.
Our program is packed with selected events which range from culture to sports and folklore - open-air performances, parades of traditional costumes and historical representations, folk songs and music and thrilling skiing competitions in winter. There is something to suit you all! And if you appreciate good music, you shall get satisfaction from the weekly first-class concerts given by our village brass-band or by other local groups.
In Al Plan/San Vigilio, you get the chance to experience rural life close at hand. When the cattle is driven down from the alpine pastures and the shepherds display their earthy humour, the party-spirit spreads and overwhelms both locals and tourists.
By now, tourism has been brightening up Al Plan/San Vigilio for more than 100 years. With our parades, we love to recall this glorious time.
In Al Plan/San Vigilio and the surrounding settlements, there are lots of architecturally interesting buildings, old farmhouses, and venerable churches. They all witness to the ancient ladin culture of our valleys which is still flourishing in our local architecture, in our language, and our traditions. With our local costumes, the curious sound of our speech, and our open character, we create for you a somewhat exotic world and we invite you to immerse yourself into it.
Al Plan/San Vigilio also provides a journey into the past. The typical settlements of Val Badia are called Viles. They consist of small groups of farmhouses and stables which are enlivened with characteristic ovens and wells.
The area is charged with an eventful history and lures spectators with the monumental residences which date from the Middle Ages, like La Granciasa in La Pli or or Ciastel da Ras in Al Plan/San Vigilio. And this is not all. In the nature reserve, you may enjoy the spectacular view of the impressive remains of the pre-historic cave-bears and walk through the most wonderful carstic terrain of the whole Alpine area.
