Skiing Disciplines - Alpine Skiing



This type of Skiing can be considered as the general Skiing sport and it is what most skiers practice. A novice skier making his way down his first groomed slopes can be called an alpine skier. It can be considered as the starting point of all non- Cross- country Skiing Disciplines. It is believed that Alpine Skiing, or Downhill Skiing, evolved from another Skiing Discipline called Cross- country Skiing. During the 1850s, the first competition on Alpine Skiing was held at Oslo, Norway. From then on, Alpine Skiing turned out to be not just a sport but also a form of leisure activity and it became widespread in Europe and the United States.

Alpine Skiing became part of various competitions. In 1922, for instance, the first Slalom was held at Mürren, Switzerland, and in 1924, it became the first Olympic Alpine event. Alpine Skiing was included in the Olympic programme at the Garmish-Partenkirchen Games held in 1936.
